Live Generously

Have you seen people around Joy wearing t-shirts with the words Live Generously printed on them? Perhaps you are one of those people. The first time I saw those words together, I thought, “Wait, that doesn’t make sense. Shouldn’t it say GIVE Generously?”

Early on, as little children interacting with siblings and playmates, we are taught to share, to be generous with others instead of eating the whole candy bar or the whole cookie all by ourselves. We are taught to share our playthings, to take turns. It’s a hard thing to learn, I see that with our grandkids; sometimes there’s a tussle between them, but other times, they share without giving it a second thought.

I think that’s what it means to Live Generously: to share without giving it a second thought, so that it becomes our way of being, our way of living. We share our time, our energy, our talents, our goods, our resources because God is so good to us. Because of the many blessings we receive from God, we can open our hands and share, knowing that God is with us and will take care of us.

Live Generously. This Thanksgiving season is an especially good time to say thank you to God and to one another. Whom will you thank, and how will you do it?
