Joy Council

5/19/26

Agenda

  • Devotions – Hope
  • Approve previous notes: approved as is – Hope first, David second
  • Saints Game:  Sunday, July 26th is a date that would work.  We should have people pay up front for their tickets.  We decided to move forward with another game.
  • Building Usage:  Continued discussions around weddings and receptions (grad parties, family reunions, showers).  Discussions around selling parcels of land in the back of the church.

Donna had a person who does wedding planning provide some input. She will share that at the next council meeting.

  • Property & Grounds:  Tom is leading the group, no outstanding issues.  Hood vent project is continuing to make progress.  Wednesday night suppers end this week.  Garage sale funds are going towards the Hood vent remodel.
  • Chamber of Commerce: The chamber reached out about becoming members of the Chamber.  Main benefit is we get to put information into their monthly mailing / newsletter.  Cost would be approx $50.  Discussed doing this when our cash situation is better.
  • Music:  We have a new pianist (Andrea Swanson).  She grew up going to Joy.  She will start 5/23.  Roxy has decided to step down as a musician.  She has asked to be off the payroll as well.  She may consider playing on Wednesday.  There will be a $125 / Sunday cost.  There is also a potential backup Pastor is in talks with.  Joan Schaak is still on our backup funeral list.
  • Summer kickoff at Library on JUne 3rd.  Hope is coordinating.
  • Discussed canceling July meeting if nothing pressing.
  • David continues to research sign repair / change options.
  • Pastor closed with prayer.
  • Reports
    • Finance Update:  See Mark’s report for details.  We were negative $8,792 for April.  Year to date we are at a negative $26,937.  Compared to last year we are running further in the red.  We have $5k left in our general fund.  If we exhaust that we will be borrowing from dedicated / restricted funds.  Bank balance was roughly $36k.  Mark to provide an update on 5/31 to the congregation.

The expenses are running flat to last year.  The revenue is trailing last year.

Donna made a motion to pause benevolence, Mark second.  Unanimous Approval.

  • Youth:  Senior Sunday and confirmation were a big success.  Middle school and High school events.  Getting family signed up for Bible School.  Summer event on 6/3.
    • Pastor:  A busy month with confirmation / baptisms / high school recognition.  Easter service was very busy for the first service and the second one was sparsely attended.  Worship committee should discuss whether 2 services makes sense.
